What If a Standard Bathroom Vanity Doesn’t Fit? A Better Way to Size Your Vanity

What If a Standard Bathroom Vanity Doesn’t Fit? A Better Way to Size Your Vanity

What If a Standard Bathroom Vanity Doesn’t Fit Your Space?

Shopping for a bathroom vanity sounds simple—until your bathroom doesn’t match one of the standard sizes available at most big-box stores.

Maybe you have 47 inches between two walls. Maybe you want a 72-inch double vanity but don’t like the limited configurations available off the shelf. Or maybe you have a long bathroom wall and want to combine several cabinet widths to create a vanity that actually fits the space.

At Global Cabinet Supply, we designed our semi-custom floating vanity cabinets specifically to solve this problem.

Our floating vanity cabinets are available in 1-inch width increments from 15 inches through 36 inches. You can use a single cabinet for a compact vanity or combine multiple cabinets to create larger single-sink and double-sink configurations.

This gives homeowners, interior designers, architects, contractors, and builders considerably more flexibility than a typical off-the-shelf bathroom vanity.

What Sizes Do Bathroom Vanities Come In?

Most ready-made bathroom vanities are sold in a limited number of standard widths, commonly including:

  • 24 inches
  • 30 inches
  • 36 inches
  • 48 inches
  • 60 inches
  • 72 inches

That works when your bathroom happens to fit one of those sizes.

But what happens when it doesn’t?

With our semi-custom vanity system, you aren’t limited to a handful of predetermined widths.

Individual vanity cabinets can be ordered from 15" to 36" wide in 1-inch increments.

That means you can choose a 16-inch cabinet, a 23-inch cabinet, a 31-inch cabinet, a 36-inch cabinet—or nearly any width in between.

You can also place multiple cabinets side by side to create much larger configurations.

Can I Combine Vanity Cabinets to Make a Larger Vanity?

Yes.

This is one of the biggest advantages of our modular floating vanity system.

Two or more cabinets can be installed next to each other beneath a continuous countertop to create a larger vanity.

For example, two 36-inch cabinets can create a 72-inch double vanity.

But the cabinets don’t have to be the same width.

You can combine different cabinet sizes depending on your available wall space, sink locations, plumbing, and desired drawer storage.

This gives you much more flexibility than purchasing a preconfigured 60-inch or 72-inch vanity.

Single-Sink Vanity Configurations

A single-sink vanity doesn’t necessarily need to consist of one cabinet.

For a larger bathroom, you may want the sink positioned over one cabinet with additional drawer storage beside it.

This allows you to create a wider vanity while keeping the plumbing concentrated within the sink cabinet.

For smaller bathrooms and powder rooms, a narrow cabinet can provide another solution.

Because our vanity cabinets start at just 15 inches wide, they can work in spaces where many conventional vanities simply won’t fit.

Double-Sink Vanity Configurations

The same system can be used to create double-sink floating vanities.

Instead of buying a predetermined 60-inch or 72-inch double vanity, you can select cabinet widths based on where you want each sink positioned.

You might use two larger sink cabinets side by side or create a configuration with sink cabinets and additional drawer storage.

This can be especially useful in a primary bathroom with a long wall where maximizing usable storage is important.

What If My Bathroom Has an Odd-Sized Space?

This is exactly where 1-inch cabinet increments become useful.

Suppose your available vanity space isn’t a standard 48, 60, or 72 inches.

Instead of choosing a vanity that’s significantly smaller than the available space—or leaving an unnecessarily large filler—you can select cabinet widths that more closely fit your room.

The result can have a much more intentional, built-in appearance while maximizing usable drawer and storage space.

Rather than designing the bathroom around the vanity, you have much more freedom to configure the vanity around the bathroom.

Don’t Sacrifice Your Entire Drawer to Plumbing

One common problem with bathroom vanities is plumbing.

Traditional vanity drawers often have to be shortened substantially—or eliminated completely—to make room for the drain and plumbing underneath the sink.

We offer optional U-shaped plumbing drawers designed to fit around the plumbing.

The center of the drawer provides clearance for the drain while storage remains available on both sides.

This allows space surrounding the plumbing to remain useful storage instead of becoming wasted cabinet space.

Real Wood Veneer Exterior

Our Natural Oak option uses Shinnoki real wood veneer, giving the vanity the warmth and natural variation of genuine wood rather than a printed imitation wood pattern.

Real wood veneer provides the grain and character people expect from wood cabinetry while maintaining the clean, contemporary appearance of a modern frameless floating vanity.

Because real wood is a natural material, variations in grain and color should be expected. Those variations are part of the character and beauty of genuine wood.

3/4-Inch Maple Plywood Cabinet Construction

The cabinet interiors are constructed using 3/4-inch domestic, calibrated, prefinished maple veneer plywood.

The light maple interior creates a clean contrast with the exterior finish while providing a durable cabinet box designed for everyday bathroom storage.

Our optional U-shaped plumbing drawer follows the same practical philosophy: preserve as much usable storage as possible while maintaining a clean, high-end appearance.

Why Choose a Floating Vanity?

Floating vanities are mounted to the wall instead of sitting on legs or a traditional toe kick.

Leaving the floor visible underneath the cabinetry can make a bathroom feel larger and gives the vanity a clean, architectural appearance.

Floating cabinetry works particularly well in modern and contemporary bathrooms because the cabinet appears visually lighter.

It can also make the floor underneath the vanity easier to access for cleaning.

Proper installation is essential. Wall-mounted vanity cabinets must be securely anchored to appropriate structural framing or wall studs according to installation requirements.

A Semi-Custom Vanity Without the Limitations of a Stock Vanity

Fully custom cabinetry is an excellent option, but not every bathroom requires a cabinetmaker to design and manufacture a completely unique vanity from scratch.

At the other extreme, mass-produced vanities can be very limiting.

Our semi-custom floating vanity system sits between those two approaches.

You select from established cabinet construction, drawer, and finish options while retaining significantly more flexibility in cabinet width and configuration.

The result is a high-quality vanity that can be configured much more closely to your actual bathroom.

And if your project requires something beyond the options available through our online vanity collection, Global Cabinet Supply also manufactures fully custom frameless cabinetry in California for residential and commercial projects.

How Do I Figure Out What Vanity Size I Need?

Start by measuring the total available wall space for the vanity.

Then consider:

  • Where the plumbing comes through the wall
  • Whether you want one sink or two
  • Where each sink should be positioned
  • How much drawer storage you want
  • Clearance from adjacent walls, doors, and fixtures
  • Countertop width and overhang
  • Whether multiple cabinet widths would better utilize the available space

Once you know the available width, you can combine cabinet sizes to create a configuration that works for your room.

For example, a wide vanity could use two sink cabinets. Another layout could use a sink cabinet with additional drawer storage beside it.

The important part is that your cabinet widths don’t all have to be identical.

Need a 16-Inch Vanity? A 72-Inch Vanity? Or Something in Between?

That’s the idea behind the system.

Instead of designing your bathroom around the limited vanity sizes available at a big-box store, you can configure the cabinetry around your bathroom.

Choose individual floating vanity cabinets from 15" through 36" wide in 1-inch increments. Use a single cabinet for a compact vanity or combine multiple cabinets to create larger single-sink and double-sink configurations.

For homeowners and design professionals looking for a high-quality, modern floating vanity with more sizing flexibility than typical off-the-shelf cabinetry, our semi-custom system provides another option between stock and fully custom cabinets.
